Goethe's father, Johann Caspar Goethe, lived with his family in a large house in Frankfurt, then an Imperial Free City of the Holy Roman Empire. Though he had studied law in Leipzig and had been appointed Imperial Councillor, he was not involved in the city's official affairs.[4] 38-year-old Johann Caspar married Goethe's mother, Catharina Elizabeth Textor, the daughter of the mayor of Frankfurt Johann Wolfgang Textor and his wife Anna Margaretha Lindheimer, when she was 17 at Frankfurt on 20 August 1748. All their children, except for Goethe and his sister, Cornelia Friederike Christiana, who was born in 1750, died at early ages.
His father and private tutors gave Goethe lessons in all the common subjects of their time, especially languages (Latin, Greek, French, Italian, English and Hebrew). Goethe also received lessons in dancing, riding and fencing. Johann Caspar, feeling frustrated in his own ambitions, was determined that his children should have all those advantages that he had not.[4]
Goethe had a persistent dislike of the Roman Catholic Church, and characterized its history as a "hodgepodge of fallacy and violence" (Mischmasch von Irrtum und Gewalt).[5] His great passion was drawing. Goethe quickly became interested in literature; Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock and Homer were among his early favourites. He had a lively devotion to theatre as well and was greatly fascinated by puppet shows that were annually arranged in his home; a familiar theme in Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship.
He also took great pleasure in reading from the great works about history and religion. He writes about this period:

In science, Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1722-1844) or "Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire", as Darwin referred to him, was a French naturalist noted for his circa 1836 statement of the so-called great problem of natural philosopher: [1]
“It is quite certain that there was a moment when life did not exist on our planet, and another moment when it appeared. It is the passage between these two states that forms the great problem of natural philosophy today.”

==
Saint-Hilaire was born in the village of Etampes, the youngest of fourteen children of a local procurator. He was still a young boy when his precocious wit and charisma caught the attention of noted patrons. Made a canon in the church at the age of 15, he was preparing himself for a clerical life when he was introduced to the study of natural history by the renowned agronomist, the Abbé de Tessier, and by the great anti-Linnean botanist Antoine de Jussieu, his isntructor at the Collège de Navarre.

Saint-Halaire, of note, was one of three people, along with Johann Goethe (1784) and Erasmus Darwin (1791), cited by English naturalist Charles Darwin in his 1859 Origin of Species as having been a forerunner to his own evolution theory

The youngest of fourteen children in a poor family from Etampes in France, Geoffroy was supported by the local clergy, who recognized his precocious intelligence. He took a scholarship to the Collège de Navarre, Paris, and was soon appointed as a demonstrator at the Jardin des Plantes, a precursor of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, as his predecessor, Bernard Lacépède, fled the Revolution. In 1793 Geoffroy became professor of vertebrate zoology at the museum; the comparable chair of invertebrate zoology was held by Lamarck.
In 1798 Geoffroy accompanied Napoleon on his conquest of Egypt and contributed to the celebrated 24 volumes of the Description de l'Egypte (1809–28; Description of Egypt). He traveled as far down the Nile as Aswan and while in Egypt he examined a number of mummified cats taken from ancient tombs. They were, he noted, identical to the animals of his day. Did this mean that species were fixed? If they were fixed why were there so many

Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Étienne

(b. Etampes, France, 15 April 1772; d. Paris, France, 19 June 1844)
zoology.
Geoffroy’s father, a procurator at the tribunal of Etampes, a small town near Paris, had little money and fourteen children. Etienne, they youngest, received as a child the surname Saint-Hilaire, which he later joined to his family name. His extraordinary career (professor at the Muséum at twenty-one) was furthered by priests who were captivated by his lively intelligence, his unusual imagination, and a sort of inner fire that added to his physical charm. Thanks to the cultivated grand seigneur the Abbé de Tressan, he became a canon at the age of fifteen with prospects for a splendid career in the church. He was introduced to natural history by the agronomist Abbè A. H. Tessier in Etampes and later by the ornithologist Brisson and Antoine de Jussieu at the Collége de Navarre in Paris where Geoffroy was on a scholarship. With the outbreak of the Revolution, ecclesiastical careers were jeopardized; obeying his father’s orders, he studied law, and then, pursuing his own desires, he began medical studies. In 1792 he was a pensionnaire libre at the College du Cardinal Lemoine in Paris, There he won the affection of that institution’s most illustrious member, Abbè Renè Just Haüy, one of the founders of crystallography. In Haüy’s simply furnished room he met all the famous scientists of the period. Consumed with enthusiasm for mineralogy, he became a student of the venerable Daubenton at the Collège de France

Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) came from a rather humble and ordinary background. His father, a solicitor by training, once had property sufficient to generate a gentleman's income of £500 per annum. But the family's financial circumstances declined so the family moved from London to a village near Usk, on the Welsh borders, where Wallace was born in Kensington Cottage on 8 January 1823.

When Wallace was six years old the family moved to Hertford, north of London, where he lived until he was fourteen. Here Wallace attended Hertford Free Grammar School which offered a classical education, not unlike Charles Darwin's at Shrewsbury Free Grammar School, including Latin grammar, classical geography and "some Euclid and algebra". Wallace left school aged fourteen in March 1837, shortly after Darwin returned from the Beagle voyage. Wallace never attended university.

Wallace then left home to join his elder brother John, an apprentice builder in London. Wallace spent his London evenings in an educational "Hall of science" for working men. In this context Wallace encountered the socialist ideas of the reformer Robert Owen. Wallace was deeply impressed by Owen's utopian social ideals - with a stress on the role of environment in determining character and behaviour. Hence if the social environment were improved, so would the morals and well being of the workers. The hall of science also introduced Wallace to the latest views of religious sceptics and secularists. Although Wallace's parents were perfectly orthodox members of the Church of England, Wallace became a sceptic.

From 1837 Wallace joined his brother William as an apprentice land surveyor. Here for the first time you can see some of the original maps he contributed to click here. Wallace began to read about mechanics and optics, his first introduction to science. His days surveying in the open air of the countryside lead him to an interest in natural history. From 1841 Wallace took up an amateur pursuit of botany by collecting plants and flowers.

From 1840-1843 Wallace remained employed as a surveyor in the west of England and Wales. In 1843 his father died. With a decline in the demand for surveyors William no longer had sufficient work to employ Wallace. After a brief period of unemployment in early 1844 Wallace worked for over a year as a teacher at the Collegiate School at Leicester.

Alfred Russel Wallace was born in Kensington Cottage near Usk, Monmouthshire, England (now part of Wales) on the 8th of January 1823 to Thomas Vere Wallace and Mary Ann Wallace (née Greenell), a downwardly mobile middle-class English couple who had moved there from London a few years earlier in order to reduce their living costs.

Wallace was the eighth of nine children, three of whom did not survive to adulthood. Wallace's father was of Scottish descent (reputedly, of a line leading back to the famous William Wallace); whilst the Greenells were a respectable Hertford family. His great grandfather on his mother's side was twice Mayor of Hertford (in 1773 and 1779).

In 1828 when Wallace was five, he and his family moved to Hertford and it was there, at Hale's Grammar School, that he received his only formal education. In about 1835 Wallace's father was swindled out of his remaining assets and the family fell on very hard times. Wallace was forced to leave school in March 1837, when he was only 14*and was sent to London to lodge with his older brother John who was a carpenter.

By mid 1837 Alfred had left London to join his eldest brother, William, in Bedfordshire. William owned a land-surveying business, and he was to learn the trade. Wallace and his brother would do such work for the next six and a half years, roaming all over the countryside of southern England and Wales. In the autumn of 1841 the Wallace brothers moved to the Neath area of Wales and it was there that Alfred's interest in natural history really began. It started because he wanted to be able to identify the plants he saw in the countryside while out surveying. He bought his first books on how to identify them and also began to collect them, forming a collection of pressed specimens.

Alfred Russel Wallace (Jan. 8, 1823–Nov. 7, 1913). British naturalist, biogeographer, author, humanitarian, best known for developing a theory of evolution through natural selection independently of Charles Darwin.

Kensington Cottage
Alfred Russel Wallace was born on January 8th, 1823, the eighth child of Thomas Vere Wallace and Mary Anne Wallace. His oddly spelled middle name was the result of a mistake at the time of registering his birth, which was never corrected.

His place of birth was Kensington Cottage, which stands just across the Usk River from the city of Usk in southeastern Wales. The Wallaces, who were not Welsh, had been forced to move to Kensington as a measure of economy after Alfred's father squandered most of his inheritance on a series of poor business decisions. They had up to that time lived as an upper middle class family in Hertford just north of London.

Supposedly, the Wallaces were descendants of the Scottish warrior chieftain William Wallace, of Braveheart fame. But, in fact, Alfred left home at such an early age that as an old man he said he knew few specifics about even his more recent ancestors. One of his typically speculative comments on this topic (My Life, 1905, vol. 1, p. 5) was that on his mother's side "the family were not improbably French refugees after the massacre of St. Bartholomew in 1572."

In 1835 his father, who seems always to have been improvident in his investments, was swindled out of most of his remaining property, and the Wallaces then fell on real hard times. Alfred had to stop attending school at the early age of 13, and yet, he educated himself and was eventually the author of many books on evolution and natural history.

Walter Bates

While teaching school in Leicester in 1844, aged 21, he met Walter Bates (1825–1892). Like Wallace, Bates had left school at an early age and lacked any formal education in natural science. But both were fanatical beetle collectors, and together they scoured Leicestershire for specimens. In 1848, after reading about the adventures of famous naturalist travelers such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin, they embarked for Brazil in hopes of a collection bonanza.

Darwin ideas on : Thermodynamics
In the years 1843 and 1865, coincidentally, the science of energetics (thermodynamics) was assembling. Bold statements deriving out of this new energy science, coming from respected physicists such as William Thomson and Rudolf Clausius, had declared as physical laws of the world that the "energy of the universe is constant" and the "entropy (or dissipation of energy) of the universe tends to a maximum". [2]
Clausius and Darwin cannot both be right.”
Roger Caillois, Coherences Aventureuses (1973), [9]
English natural philosopher Herbert Spencer is one to have made one of the first attempts to reconcile the two theories: natural selection and thermodynamics.

Final words
In 1882, in the last letter Darwin is known to have dictated and signed, he wrote: [7]
“I believe that I have somewhere said (but I cannot find the passage) that the principle of continuity renders it probable that the principle of life will hereafter be shown to be part or consequence of some general law.”

(add discussion)

Human thermodynamics
In 1952, Darwin's grandson English physicist C.G. Darwin (Charles Galton Darwin) published his The Next Million Years, wherein the "Introduction" chapter of which he defined the science of "human thermodynamics" as the statistical mechanical study of conservative dynamical systems of human molecules, a science through which, in his view, would be able to "predict" the next million years of human evolution. [5] C.G. Darwin is thus classified as one of the founders of human thermodynamics.

Pierre Gassendi's parents were Françoise Fabry and Antoine Gassend. Note that the fact there is no "i" on the end of Gassend is not a misprint. In fact Pierre Gassendi was actually given the name Pierre Gassend and only later used the now familiar Gassendi form. The family were peasant farmers, but there is some suggestion that Antoine may have owned the land he farmed which would mean the family were not too poor. Pierre spent his childhood in the village of Champtercier. He was quite a frail child but showed an enthusiasm for reading and writing at a young age. His uncle, Thomas Fabry, was the parish priest and he gave the young Pierre a good educational grounding.
When Pierre was seven years old he was sent to school in Digne, a much larger town across the valley about 10 km from Champtercier. There he learnt Latin and arithmetic and, except for a year spent at school in Riez, he remained in Digne until 1607 [5]:-
At the age of eleven he so impressed the Bishop of Digne with an oration delivered in Latin at the church in Champtercier that the Bishop is said to have declared that "this child will one day be the marvel of his century." On the secular side, during his last two years at school in Digne the young Gassendi composed prosimetric farces in Latin for his fellow schoolboys to perform in the large houses of the town.

In 1607, Gassendi left school in Digne and returned to his native village of Champtercier where he spent the next two years. Then in the autumn of 1609 he went to the University of Aix-en-Provence to study philosophy under Père Philibert Fesaye. He clearly was an exceptional student for when Fesaye was absent he asked Gassendi to take the lecture in his place. From 1611, Gassendi studied theology under Professor Raphaelis and, as part of the course, he learnt Greek and Hebrew. While he was studying at Aix, his father Antoine Gassend died (in 1611).

In thermodynamics, Robert Hooke (1635-1703) (IQ=195|#22) (CR=100|#) was an English physicist, chemist, engineer, and natural philosopher noted for a number of achievements and inventions, firstly and foremost the construction of the gas law experimental device the "pneumatical engine", under commission of Robert Boyle (IQ=185), nature abhors a vacuum theorist, among numerous other theoretical insights, such as that heat is motion (volume expansion), evolution, cellular anatomy, discoverer of the inverse square law of gravity, light theory (wave theory of light), and others.

Shoulders of giants
English chemist Isaac Newton famously remarked in a letter to his rival Robert Hooke dated February 5, 1676 that: [21]

"What Des-Cartes did was a good step. You have added much several ways, & especially in taking ye colours of thin plates into philosophical consideration. If I have seen further it is by standing on ye sholders of Giants [sic]."

(add discussion)

Education
Little, supposedly, is known about Hooke's early years. From about the time Hooke was ten, however, his father became ill and this contributed to Hooke being left to educate himself in the highly practical way that interested him. At age 13, Hooke was orphaned, following his father's suicide, and was left £40 inheritance by his father, together with all his father's books, after which his family sent him to London to become an apprentice to the Peter Lely, a portrait painter. [18] Hooke soon decided, however, that it would waste his money studying under Lely, and he made the decision that what he really needed was a school education.

Hooke thereafter shortly, circa 1650, age 15, enrolled in Westminster School, boarding in the house of the headmaster Richard Busby. Busby is said to have realized he had a quite remarkable pupil, noting, e.g., that Hooke had mastered the first six books of Euclid's Elements by the end of his first week at school and so encouraged Hooke to study by himself in his library.

In science, Isaac Newton (1642-1727) (193-277 PE) (0-84 ME) (GR:1) (RE=84) (IQ:220|#2) (CR=509|#4) was an English physicist, mathematician, philosopher, and chemist noted for his 1686 The Principia, in which the theory of universal gravitation, three laws of motion, and the concept of "force" were put forward, and the 1704 Opticks, a latter edition of which (1718) led to the start of the chemical revolution, in particular the description of chemical force and affinity tendencies in the famous “Query 31”.

Halley | Wren | Hooke
In Jan 1684, Edmond Halley, Christopher Wren, and Robert Hooke were engaged in an animated conversation, either over drinks before a roaring fire (Christianson, 1988), or at a coffee house in London (?), on the topic of why planets traveled in ellipses, according to which, either Hooke or Halley, or both, depending on story, claimed to have solved the problem, via the theory that the inward force of attraction between planets and the sun must decrease in inverse proportion to the square of the distance between them. Wren, to settle the matter, offered them either a large sum or money or book worth forty shillings to whoever could come up with the mathematical means of proving their theory. Hooke, supposedly, claimed to have solved the problem, “but would conceal the solution for some time so that others trying and failing might know how to value it, when he should make it public.”

In Aug 1684, Wren went to Cambridge to see if Newton had the solution, the event of which, as recounted by French mathematician Abraham de Moivre, to whom Newton related the event in his later years, is as follows:

“In 1684, Halley came to visit Newton at Cambridge, after they had been some time together, Halley asked him what he thought the curve would be that would be described by the planets supposing the force of attraction towards the sun be reciprocal to the square of their distance from it. Newton replied immediately that it would be an ellipsis; Hooke, struck with hoy and amazement, asked him how he knew it, to which Newton said that he had calculated it, whereupon Halley asked him for his calculation. Without any further delay, Newton looked among his papers, but could not find it, but he promised him to renew it, and send it.”

Newton then spent the following three months laboring over a nine-page document titled “On the Motion of Revolving Bodies”, which he finished in Nov and sent to Halley in London. Newton then went into the Gibbsian flow state, of standing focused work, and over the course of the next 18-months produced his 550-page treatise Principia. [10]

Religion
The subject of Newton and religion, supposedly, is a large topic. To put things into perspective, in 1619, when Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), derived his three laws of planetary motion, on the nature of elliptical orbits, based on astronomical observations made by Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), data which provided one of the key foundations for Newton’s theory of universal gravitation (1687), scientists, nearly unanimously, not only believed in God or gods, but also, Kepler being one example, believed that the planets were pushed around by "angels" beating their wings.

“God who gave animals self-motion beyond our understanding is without doubt able to implant other principles of motion in bodies which we may understand as little. Some would readily grant this may be a spiritual one; yet a mechanical one might be shown.”
— Isaac Newton (1674), philosophical query notes: [5]

Newton, to give one example of religious theory objection, had certain issues with the Julian calender dating system and would objectionably not label years as AD, but instead used AC (Anno Christum), signifying is objection to the argument of the existence of the trinity, namely his view that a person named Jesus may have existed, may have been the son of God, and may have been christened or arisen, but definitely was not the ‘Lord’ or God. Christiaan Huygens was born on 14 April 1629 in The Hague, into a rich and influential Dutch family,[3][4] the second son of Constantijn Huygens. Christiaan was named after his paternal grandfather.[5][6] His mother was Suzanna van Baerle. She died in 1637, shortly after the birth of Huygens' sister.[7] The couple had five children: Constantijn (1628), Christiaan (1629), Lodewijk (1631), Philips (1632) and Suzanna (1637).[8]

Constantijn Huygens was a diplomat and advisor to the House of Orange, and also a poet and musician. His friends included Galileo Galilei, Marin Mersenne and René Descartes.[9] Huygens was educated at home until turning sixteen years old. He liked to play with miniatures of mills and other machines. His father gave him a liberal education: he studied languages and music, history and geography, mathematics, logic and rhetoric, but also dancing, fencing and horse riding.[5][8][10]

In 1644 Huygens had as his mathematical tutor Jan Jansz de Jonge Stampioen, who set the 15-year-old a demanding reading list on contemporary science.[11] Descartes was impressed by his skills in geometry.[4]

In science, Christian Huygens (1629-1695) was a Dutch physicist noted for his 1669 determination that the quantity of the mass of an object multiplied by its velocity squared mv² remains constant during perfectly elastic collisions, such as between steel balls, and for his 1674 work with French physicist Denis Papin on vacuum pumps. Huygens’ quantity was later called vis viva by German mathematician Gottfried Leibniz in 1886. [1]

Education
Huygens was the well-traveled son of a rich and prominent Dutch family, that had entertained Rene Descartes. Huygens studied mathematics and law at the University of Leiden, spent time at Paris and London, where he met Isaac Newton, among other important people, and thereafter soon became an avid experimenter. In 1655, prior to developing skills as a lens-grinder, he and his brother built a telescope and discovered Titan and the rings of Saturn. [4]

Wave theory of light
Huygens lens grinding work led him into an investigation as to how lens work, research that resulted in several published papers on light.

In 1677, he observed how Iceland spar spit light into two parts, rotated through different degrees.

In 1678 paper communicated to France's Royal Academy of Sciences, in which he suggested that light is a series of shock waves, spreading in wave fronts generated by impacting light particles and making waves among the tiny particles of the ether, the invisible substance permeating the universe. [4] This is now known as the wave theory of light. In his 1690 Treatise on Light, he summarized: [3]

“I have thus shown in what manner one can imagine that light propagates successively by spherical waves.”

The later theory of light by Isaac Newton in his Opticks (1704) proposed a different explanation for reflection, refraction, and interference of light assuming the existence of light particles. The double slit interference experiments of Thomas Young vindicated Huygens' wave theory in 1801, as the results could no longer be explained with light particles; these two views, following the invention of the light quanta (photon), resulted to yield the wave-particle duality model.

Vacuum pump
In circa 1645, German engineer Otto Guericke invented a vacuum pump to disprove Greek philosopher Parmenides' circa 485 BC hypothesis that “nature abhorred a vacuum”. The invention was described in the 1657 book Mechanical Hydraulic Pneumatics by German scientist Gaspar Schott, a correspondent of Guericke. [2] Among those to have read the book were Huygens and his associate Irish physicist Robert Boyle, who each built or acquired pumps of their own.

Some time prior to 1674, French physicist Denis Papin moved to Paris and assisted Huygens in his experiments with the air-pump and gunpowder piston and cylinder engines, the results of which Experiences of the Void (Experiences du Vuide) were published at Paris in that year, and also in the form of five papers by Huygens and Papin jointly, in the Philosophical Transactions for 1675. This association was a precursor to Papin’s later invention of the first steam engine in 1690

(Course of Lectures on Natural Philosophy)، وقد احتوت على تخمينات لبعض النظريات اللاحقة.

[
RIGHT]Thomas Young's parents were Thomas Young Senior, a cloth merchant and banker, and Sarah Davis who were [11]:-

... rather below than above the middle station of life.

In [11] Young writes that his father:-

... followed the commercial fashion of the day, and became a manufacturer of money: he was for a time very successful in his speculations: but though a man of strict integrity, he was at last involved in the ruinous consequences of the general depression of the value of landed property so fatal to the country's bankers.

Thomas was the eldest of the ten children in this Quaker family but, from soon after his birth, he was brought up by his mother's father Robert Davis in Minehead about 15 miles from Milverton.

As a young boy, he did not find school very stimulating. He attended the village school from around four years of age, then was sent to a clergyman before he was six [11]:-

... who had neither the talent nor temper to teach anything well.

He then spent eighteen months attending a boarding school near Bristol, but mostly he worked on his own, getting through the set books in less than half the time taken by the teacher. In 1782 he entered a school in Crompton, Dorset, which was more suitable for a young genius since pupils were given more freedom to progress at their own pace. For Young this pace was very fast, for he was undoubtedly an infant prodigy. By the time he left this school in 1786 he was knowledgeable in many languages, including ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew, as well as French and Italian. He had also acquired a good grounding in Newtonian physics, studied optics and made several instruments with the help of a tutor at the school. His passion for eastern languages continued after he left the school and he began to study Arabic, Persian, Chaldee, Syriac, and Samarian.

Although only thirteen years old, Young now became a tutor to Hudson Gurney, the twelve year old grandson of David Barcley who lived in a country house near Ware in Hertfordshire. Young spent five years to 1792 working in the country house or at Barcley's London home. He took the opportunity to educate himself in mathematics, reading Euclid's Elements and the works of Newton. He also read other scientific books, as well as books on history and languages. In the autumn of 1792 he moved to London to begin his studies of medicine. As well as attending lectures at the Hunterian school, he enrolled as a pupil at St Bartholomew's Hospital. Required to dissect an ox's eye, he began to develop a theory of accommodation for the eye. He published his theories in Observations on vision read to the Royal Society of London on 30 May 1793. Young was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on 19 June 1794.

Young continued his medical training, entering the University of Edinburgh in 1794. As a Quaker he could not study at Oxford or Cambridge, so within Britain he could only obtain a degree from a Scottish university. After one year of study he went to the University of Göttingen, arriving there in October 1795. After submitting a dissertation, Young was given an oral examination and passed on 30 April 1796. The dissertation used Young's expertise in anatomy, language and sound. He left Göttingen in late July and visited Brunswick, Gotha, Weimar, Jena, Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin before returning to England in February 1797. He discovered, however, that a change in regulations by the College of Physicians required a period of two years study at the same university before qualifying to practice medicine. He therefore went to Emmanuel College Cambridge, but before doing so he had to leave the Quakers and declare himself a member of the Church of England. He did not find this hard for he had been moving steadily away from the strict Quaker rules, attending dances and the theatre while in Edinburgh.

Although enrolled in the medical course, Young did not study medicine at Cambridge, feeling that he already knew sufficient of that subject. Rather he worked on his own, learning more physics in order that he might pursue interests coming from his Göttingen dissertation. He had little respect for the Cambridge mathematicians writing:-

I am ashamed to find how much the foreign mathematicians for these forty years have surpassed the English in the higher branches of the sciences.

The Cambridge men thought little of Young in return. A tutor wrote (see [7]):-

He seldom gave an opinion, and never volunteered one
. He never laid down the law like other learned doctors, or uttered ... sayings to be remembered. Indeed, like most mathematicians, ... he never seemed to think abstractly. A philosophical fact, a difficult calculation, an ingenious instrument, or a new invention, would engage his attention ...

On 13 December 1797 Young's great-uncle died and left him his London home and a good sum of money which left Young financially secure. He read the paper Sound and light to the Royal Society in January 1800 and a further paper On the mechanism of the eye in November 1800. This second paper contained further details of the process of accommodation of the eye and measured astigmatism for the first time. He read another paper On the theory of light and colours to the Royal Society late in 1801 and it was published in the following year. This paper put forward the theory of three colour vision to explain how the eye could detect colours. Also in 1801 Young sold his great uncle's house and bought a new one in Welbeck Street. Soon after he moved in, he was approached to lecture at the Royal Institution. He accepted and worked hard to produce a course of 50 lectures which he gave beginning in January 1802. The course was divided into four parts: Mechanics; Hydrodynamics; Physics; and Mathematics. It covered a much broader range of topics, however, than these section headings suggest. His scholarly lectures were not a great success since, as one listener wrote [7]:-
[/RIGHT]
The eldest son of Thomas Young, a mercer
and banker, and of Sara Davis, Young was raised as a member of the Society of Friends and was largely self-educated in languages and natural philosophy.1 He learned to read at age two : and by the time he was six, he had read twice through the Bible and had started the study of Latin. Between 1780 and 1786 he attended two boarding schools, where he learned elementary mathematics and gained a reading knowledge of Latin, Greek, French, and Italian. He also had begun independent study of natural history, natural philosophy, and fluxions, and had learned to make telescopes and microscopes. In 1786 Young began independent study of Hebrew, Chaldean, Syriac, Samaritan, Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Ethiopic. Shortly thereafter he became tutor to his lifelong friend and biographer Hudson Gurney, who was a member of the Gurney banking family. By 1792 Young had become a proficient Greek and Latin scholar : had mastered the fluxionary calculus : and had read Newton’s Principia and Opticks, Lavoisier’s Elements of Chemistry, Joseph Black’s manuscript lectures on chemistry, and Boerhaave’s Methoclus studii medici, in addition to plays, law, and politics

Michael Faraday was born in the country village of Newington, Surrey, now a part of South London. His father was a blacksmith who had migrated from the north of England earlier in 1791 to look for work. His mother was a country woman of great calm and wisdom who supported her son emotionally through a difficult childhood. Faraday was one of four children, all of whom were hard put to get enough to eat, since their father was often ill and incapable of working steadily. Faraday later recalled being given one loaf of bread that had to last him for a week. The family belonged to a small Christian sect, called Sandemanians, that provided spiritual sustenance to Faraday throughout his life. It was the single most important influence upon him and strongly affected the way in which he approached and interpreted nature.

Faraday received only the rudiments of an education, learning to read, write, and cipher in a church Sunday school. At an early age he began to earn money by delivering newspapers for a book dealer and bookbinder, and at the age of 14 he was apprenticed to the man. Unlike the other apprentices, Faraday took the opportunity to read some of the books brought in for rebinding. The article on electricity in the third edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica particularly fascinated him. Using old bottles and lumber, he made a crude electrostatic generator and did simple experiments. He also built a weak voltaic pile with which he performed experiments in electrochemistry.

Michael Faraday, whose family was very poor, became one of the greatest scientists in history. His achievement was remarkable in a time when science was the preserve of people born into privileged families.

Education and Early Life
Michael Faraday was born on September 22, 1791 in London, England. He was the third child of James and Margaret Faraday. His father was a blacksmith who had poor health. Before marriage, his mother had been a servant. The family lived in a degree of poverty.

Michael Faraday attended a local school until he was 13, where he received a basic education. To earn money for the family he started working as a delivery boy for a bookshop. He worked hard and impressed his employer. After a year, he was promoted to become an apprentice bookbinder
