لينوس باولنغ (بالإنجليزية: Linus Carl Pauling) ـ (ولد في 28 شباط/فبراير 1901 ـ 19 آب/أغسطس 1994). هو كيميائي وفيزيائي أمريكي، يعتبر من أول الفيزيائيين الكميين المتحصلين على جائزة نوبل في الكيمياء، وذلك سنة 1954.
السياسة

لم يكن للينوس أي انتماء سياسي. خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية قام بتطوير متفجرات ووقود صواريخ. كما قام بعمل جهاز قياس الأوكسجين في البحارات الأمريكية. عندما بدأ مشروع مانهاتن عرض عليه روبرت اوبنهايمر أن يكون مدير قسم الكيمياء للمشروع ولكنه رفض. تحصل سنة 1948 على ميدالية من يدي هاري ترومان لمساهمته في الجيش الأمريكي. لكن إلقاء القنبلة النووية على هيروشيما وناغازاكي أثر فيه فانضم إلى الهيئة الطوارئ لعلماء الذرة بقيادة ألبرت أينشتاين وكان الهدف منها توعية الرأي العام من أخطار السلاح النووي. قاد نشاط لينوس باولنغ السياسي إلى رفض منحه جواز سفر سنة 1952 لحضور مؤتمر علمي في لندن وأعيد له جوازه قبل سفره لتسلم جائزة نوبل سنة 1954.
حصل على عدد كبير من الجوائز من بينها جائزتا نوبل، أولاهما في الكيمياء سنة 1954، والثانية في السلام سنة 1962 لحملته ضد التجارب النووية، كما حصل على قلادة



Linus Carl Pauling (February 28, 1901 – August 19, 1994)[4] was anAmerican chemist, biochemist, peace activist, author, and educator. He was oneof the most influential chemists in history and ranks among the most importantscientists of the 20th century.[5][6] Pauling was one of the founders of thefields of quantum chemistry and molecular biology.[7]



For his scientific work, Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize inChemistry in 1954. In 1962, for his peace activism, he was awarded the NobelPeace Prize. This makes him the only person to be awarded two unshared NobelPrizes. He is one of only four individuals to have won more than one Nobel Prize (the others being Marie Curie, John Bardeen, and Frederick Sanger). Pauling isalso one of only two people to be awarded Nobel Prizes in different fields, theother being Marie Curie.[8]



However, his promotion of orthomolecular medicine, megavitamintherapy, dietary supplements, and vitamin C have been criticized, with apediatrician Paul Offit stating that Pauling "was arguably the world's greatestquack" for his assertions about dietary supplements,[9] and the medicalestablishment concluding that his claims that vitamin C could prevent colds ortreat cancer were quackery.[4][10] Recently, a 2009 review suggested thatPauling's views on high dose vitamin C as an effective anticancer agent mighthave some merit, but only when it is administered intravenously, so as toachieve high enough plasma saturation levels.



Early life and education



Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon,[12][13] as the first-bornchild of Herman Henry William Pauling (1876–1910) and Lucy Isabelle "Belle" Darling (1881–1926).[14] He was named "Linus Carl," in honor of Lucy's father, Linus, and Herman's father, Carl.[15] Herman and Lucy – then 23 and 18 yearsold, respectively – had met at a dinner party in Condon. Six months later, thetwo were married.[16]
